News from Hollywood Arts: What is it and how does it work?!
August 2006

Dear friend of Hollywood Arts!

What good news! Guess what I have to report? For those of you who don't know this, Hollywood Arts was metaphysically blessed by being recognized as a California corporation on Valentine's Day 2006. And in only two weeks, we will be celebrating our six-month anniversary!

So we are throwing an imaginary party! What are we celebrating? $80,000! Thats how much we've raised in just five and a half months to get our programs to the teenagers living in the shelters or on the streets of Hollywood.

But, as always, there is more to do...so instead of giving us books or candles or other anniversary gifts we may never use, we would like to ask you to send one of our clients on a very special field trip or help us get that much closer to building them the art center they really want.

Thank you!

Dylan Kendall
Executive Director

Persia White, actress, musician, activist, and best known for her role on the TV comedy series Girlfriends, shows she is a real friend to homeless teenagers. Persia comes to theater classes and works with the teenagers

I can honestly say the arts saved my life. As a troubled teenager, music, painting and theater became the ray of light that pulled me off a dark path of self destruction and confusion.

It's my great joy to work with Hollywood Arts and bring that same light into the lives of teenagers in need. Hollywood Arts recognizes how important and healing the arts are and that together we can make a difference in the lives of youth who are our future.

Question: What mixes video games, classical music and lasers?

    Answer: Video Games Live!

Renowned video game composers, Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall, present the most popular video games performed by top orchestras and choirs around the world, combining exclusive video footage and music arrangements, synchronized lighting, solo performers, electronic percussionists and unique interactive segments to create an explosive one-of-a-kind entertainment experience.

Why do we care? First, Tommy Tallarico is the honoree for our first annual Hollywood Arts Dream awards (1/27/07)! Second, a generous and anonymous donor has purchased FIVE TERRACE BOXES for our youth! That's 20 seats right in the front to see this amazing show! But we can't choose which 20 teenagers should go, but we could choose 35 or more so please help us buy another 4 boxes by using the coupon below....

Variety- The Children's Charity shows it has heart for Hollywood Arts!

Long considered the "Heart of Show Business", Variety-The Children's Charity finds its roots in the entertainment industry. The Variety Club, established in 1927 by eleven Vaudeville showmen, still exists today for one reason - to help children in need. In their 7-decade legacy of caring for children, they have become the largest and most effective children's charity in the world. The organization has grown to 53 chapters in 14 countries raising over $1 billion worldwide.

    EMOTIONAL HEALTH
    How I feel about myself.
Hollywood Arts uses creative activities to stimulate self-respect by creating a safe place to process trauma and life challenges; to offer opportunities for public validation critical to improved self-perception; and to create a new community of supportive friends and mentors.

    LIFE SKILLS
    Soft skills.
Hollywood Arts uses creative activities to teach our clients how to communicate non-aggressively with a partner or in a group; how to control impulsive and disruptive behavior; how to trust peers and adults; how to bring creative and analytical thinking skills to problem solving; and other soft skills we take for granted.

    JOB-READINESS SKILLS
    Hard skills.
Hollywood Arts uses creative activities as a dynamic way to stimulate intellectual curiosity and to teach vocabulary, English, math, basic HTML, computer literacy, marketing, design: all measurable, curriculum-based, job-ready learning.

Let me give you an example: in our theater class, we set up an scene. A teenager picks a story from his life. A cop pulls over the driver of a stolen vehicle. One youth plays the cop, one youth plays the alleged thief. We push our clients to think empathetically about the cop’s life and try different behaviors. We push our clients to think about different ways to solve the problem of being pulled over: resist, confess, use logic skills etc. Throughout the class we also teach vocabulary such as protagonist, dramaturgy, and staging techniques such as ‘cheating to the audience’. Let me tell you what happens--the youth shoot up their hands to answer our questions.

    WHY DOES IT WORK?
Because before we started programming, we asked our clients what they wanted, what was important to them, and here's what they replied: Video-gaming, fashion, drawing, photography, hair and makeup, acting, rap, poetry, animation, tattooing. What a perfect fit that all these activities are creative...
